Jimi’s sundown: our dachshund’s last day

Warning: if you’ve ever loved or lost a pet, this may be a hard video to watch. Jimi Hendrix Adams was the best dog in the entire world. Once dubbed the hummingbird of dogs, we had a very full and very loving but very short five years with him. Jimi became suddenly afflicted with a GI disorder and IVDD that turned out to be inoperable. He loss the use of his legs, was in a lot of pain and was suffering complete incontinence. After much prayer and veterinary consult, we made the heart wrenching decision to let him go. Before we had him put to sleep we took him all around Austin, Texas to say goodbye to all his favorite spots. We chose to hire a mobile vet who specializes in at-home pet euthanasia. We laid him on our bed that he shared with us as the Texas sunshine streamed through the windows. The five of us huddled close (us, our child, and our other dog June). We fed him a donut and two Reeces Peanut Butter Cups, kissed him goodbye, and told him we loved him. We wrapped his much loved tennis ball and his frail little body in his favorite towel, and buried him in his favorite spot in our backyard with a scoop of peanut butter as tears rolled off our faces. www.adoredaustin.com music: “Hear You Me” by Jimmy Eat World (Jimi was named after our love for Jimi Hendrix’s performance at the Monterey Pop Festival, Jimmy Page- one of the greatest musicians of all time, and Jimmy Eat World- whose mutual love for their Clarity album largely instigated our relationship)

I’m so sorry for your loss! Jimi was very lucky to have such a wonderful family. Your love for him is obvious! My family lost our 16-year-old dachshund, Cassie, on 2/4/10. We were lucky to have her in our lives for so long, but it’s still so hard…we miss her every day! I know Jimi was not with you for nearly long enough, but at least you know that you made every day of his life special. Please know you are in my thoughts…

God bless you & keep you in the joy of memories & in the knowledge that you will see Jimi again. I work in rescue & I’ve walked that last walk too many times to count. The unconditional love of these critters knows no bounds. Please know that your family is held up in prayer by all of us who know your pain. ((hugs)) Please contact me if you need to talk to another doxologist. :)

@bananarchysplit He was a great dog; it was the least we could do.

Thank you so much for sharing such an openly honest and emotional moment. We lost our sweet Molly dachsie the day after we learned she had Catastrophic Lymphoma. She was only 2 years old. I wish we could have done for her what you were able to do for Jimi. I found it really comforting to watch your video. I know only too well how you both are hurting. I wish I could help you the way your video has helped me. Much love and comfort to you in your time of grief.

the cute little guy was so skinny! I don’t know anything about what he suffered from, but did it make him unable to eat or properly absorb essential nutrients? oh, and that was so sweet of you to give him that reese’s cup! This video really conveys how much you two loved him. And the best thing about dogs is that you’re guarenteed a best friend. I wish the best for you. Please take care.
